Ovingham

Ovingham is situated on the north bank of the River Tyne roughly half way between Newcastle upon Tyne (to the east) and Hexham (to the west). To the south, immediately over the river and up a very steep hill, is the town of Prudhoe. Ovingham has about 1200 residents living in roughly 550 houses. The village is almost totally surrounded by attractive farmland but is well placed for easy access to Newcastle and Metro Centre shops.

Our church - St. Mary the Virgin - was

built 1000 years ago and boasts a

Saxon tower.

The Goose Fair Cross. Every year in June, the

village holds the annual Goose Fair.

The Fair is preceeded by a procession which

starts at the Cross and makes its way through

the village to the village green.

The bridge over the River Tyne is

very narrow and not for the faint hearted!

It connects us to Prudhoe on the south

bank - a town of about 10 000 people.

The Pack Horse Bridge is an attractive feature of the village. It's from here that the annual 'Proclamation' is made during the annual Goose Fair procession to the village green.

This is a print of an old engraving of Ovingham by William Irving in 1897.

It is a view of Ovingham from the pant, westwards towards the Pack Horse Bridge over Whittle Dene. The house on the right is Glebe Farmhouse and towards the bottom of the road, on the left, is the Bridge End Inn.

OVINGHAM GOOSE FAIR

The Goose Fair is held on the third Saturday in June every year. Entertainment is wide ranging and includes morris dancers, rappers and a drama club production. Stalls range from craftwork to "Singin' Hinnies" - a traditional Northumbrian eat treat! It is always packed and the weather is almost always sunny.

It's a great day out......come and enjoy it.
